blogthe lights are on, but nobody's home in connecticut prisonFebruary 25, 2010
what if steven hayes wasn't only thinking about ending it all? what if he figured that though 10 klonopin and 10 doses of thorazine might kill him, chances are it was nothing more than a quick high and a long nap. hayes had plenty of experience taking pills. he was a drug addict for most of (more…)
Joshua's lettersFebruary 24, 2010
in all, i received over 200 pages of letters written by joshua komisarjevsky while he was being held in Macdougall-walker, c.i., the same prison in which steven hayes tried to commit suicide.
most of the letters came in business letter envelopes, addressed to me, and with a return address of 1153 East Street, South Suffield, (more…) steven hayes' pajamasFebruary 23, 2010
the big news out of court in connecticut today is that steven hayes has been given permission to wear his pajamas. Hayes is being held in a prison infirmary after a suicide attempt.
citing the gag order, the DOC is refusing to answer any pajamas questions. but one expert on prison sleepwear did say that the pajamas are probably NOT Dr. Denton's. (more…) lawyers back in court in steven hayes murder trialFebruary 23, 2010
the judge and lawyers from both sides in the steven hayes murder trial are supposed to meet in court today to try and sort things out. the trial process has been on hold for weeks now, first because of hayes' apparent suicide attempt, then by a series of blunders by officials. the judge, jon (more…)
the curious court case of steven hayesFebruary 19, 2010
With steven hayes' trial degenerating into a comedy of errors, mostly because of negligence on the part of the DOC, the presidng judge takes a hard line stance: if this keeps up, his honor says, maybe next month we'll have to appoint someone to look into it.
as John Candy's Uncle Buck once said: Oooohh! as nothing happens in court, steven (more…) New Haven Register editorialFebruary 18, 2010
it's hard to disagree with today's editorial in the New Haven Register (see link to the left). Connecticut's Department of Correction continues to bungle the handling of two of their highest profile residents. However, as it has done many times, the Register continues to write that In the Middle of the Night tries to shift blame from komisarjevsky to Hayes. That's just not true. (more…)
and yet again... another delay in steven hayes' trialFebruary 17, 2010
so hayes shows up in court, looking like he's on a hunger strike, and is sent back to prison infirmary. this time, the judge says he has to get ok'ed by the prison shrink, who apparently is on vacation. can't blame him, i wouldn't want to be associated with this trial either.
paperwork snafu delays hayes' trial once againFebruary 16, 2010
boy oh boy, the criminal justice system in Connecticut runs like a Swiss clock. this time, officials didn't prepare the paperwork to have Hayes transported to the courthouse. things are supposed to be put right by tomorrow. the tomorrow's are piling up in the New Haven courthouse.
prison screwed up steven hayes' medsFebruary 15, 2010
way to go Randall Beach! the reporter and his paper, the New Haven Register, are starting to play hardball with Connecticut's Department of Corrections. a source told that paper that Steven Hayes' medications were improperly administered. the thorazine and konopin were supposed to be crushed and mixed in liquid. If they had been, Hayes wouldn't have been able to horde them, or "cheek" them in prison parlance. (more…)
the mark of the beast?February 14, 2010
while we're waiting for trial proceedings to start up again, for whatever it's worth, i thought to pass along this piece of info. Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes first met in a small halfway house in June of 2006. the exact date was June 6th, 2006. When i first saw the date, while combing through court (more…)
what's joshua doing?February 12, 2010
with all the clamor surrounding steven hayes' overdose and jury selection, joshua komisarjevsky is out of the public's eye. i'm sure he's keeping tabs on what's going on, and i'm sure he's writing furiously about it. like all that joshua has put a pen to, that writing would be very interesting to (more…)
i know where you liveFebruary 11, 2010
a comment was posted on a news story in the hartford courant that threatened Thomas Ullman, Steven Hayes' attorney. Ullman has asked the Connecticut State Police to investigate.
As someone who was the target of an avalanche of vitriolic comments on news stories and websites, I understand his concern. You don't like how Mr. Ullman is doing his job, you don't like what I write, you have every right to voice your opinion--and online comment sections are a terrific forum for just that. but no one has the right to personalize their attacks or to make threats. i hope they catch the person who posted the threat, and i hope they prosecute them. gentle e readerFebruary 11, 2010
so amazon has acquiesced, and will comply to a price hike for their e books, macmillan has signed on with IPad and industry pundits predict an explosion in e readers. so here's my question, what function, exactly, are the publishing houses charging for? no paper, no printing, no binding. all they're doing is distributing (more…)
thorazine???February 9, 2010
so hayes was supposed to be taking daily doses of thorazine (and klonopin, a valium-like sedative) but instead saved them up and then took perhaps ten dosages at once. it might have been enough to kill him, experts say, had his condition gone undiscovered longer.
so my question is, the judge stopped (more…) jury selection delayed until Feb. 16thFebruary 8, 2010
Thomas Ullman told the court today that his client, Steven Hayes, is suicidal (no kidding?) and being held in inhumane conditions in McDougall-Walker Correctional's infirmary. Apparently, the lights in the infirmary are on 24 a day. Hayes is also wearing some sort of restraining garment and being denied his meds. (more…)
back on Amazon!February 6, 2010
after six days of punishment for being a minion of Macmillan publishing, In the Middle of the Night again has a "buy" button on its Amazon.com page. thank you, Amazon, for teaching me a valuable lesson. from now on I promise to write books that can only be read on Kindle.
increasingly vagueFebruary 5, 2010
steven hayes is due back in court monday. the judge said he would then "make an initial assessment" of hayes' competency, and from there will decide when jury selection will resume. one connecticut columnist called the circumstance surrounding hayes' reported suicide attempt as "increasingly vague." i'll be surprised if the facts of that event are made public on monday. but i think it would be a mistake for officials not to do so. like most imposed secrecies, the gag order's byproducts are speculation and mistrust. (more…)
amazon, wow.February 4, 2010
there's a court hearing scheduled for today to decide how and when to proceed with accused triple murderer steven hayes's trial and his competency to do so. i won't be shocked if hayes' defense team tries to use his physical and mental condition to postpone. when details become available, i'll pass them on.
in the meantime, i'm getting a real charge out of amazon.com's way of punishing macmillan, which is really just punishing hundreds of authors most (more…) hayes in prison infirmaryFebruary 3, 2010
according the the hartford courant, hayes is recovering from his suicide attempt in Macdougall-Walker Correctional's infirmary. the paper also reported that jury selection will begin again next week.
if the comment section on online newsstories is a barometer, then public anger toward hayes and komisarjevsky is still at a fever pitch. "add to shopping cart"February 3, 2010
you still can't buy In the Middle of the Night directly from Amazon.com. Because of an ebook dispute btwn Amazon and Macmillan, the parent company of St. Martin's True Crime, the giant online bookseller has removed the "add to shopping cart" link on all Macmillan titles including In the Middle of the Night. During the (more…)
hayes back in the slammerFebruary 2, 2010
to those in charge of keeping the lid on this story: all you had to do is give the press a medical update and you would have sidestepped much speculation and an enormous two-day news cycle. sheeesh!
just as an aside, because of a spat between Amazon.com and Macmillan, the parent company of (more…) gag orderFebruary 2, 2010
citing the gag order, officials are denying the people of Connecticut information on the medical condition and circumstances surrounding the suicide attempt of a prisoner whose trial they are paying for
citing the gag order, the Connecticut Department of Corrections is refusing to answer questions about the handling of their highest profile prisoners, (more…) hayes updateFebruary 1, 2010
still very little out of newsrooms in connecticut on the status of steven hayes, lots of coverage, little new info. one story does report that he is supposed to recover and that the jury selection has been postponed for at least two days.
just as a point of interest, up until his hospitalization, hayes was a resident of MacDougall-Walker Correctional, the (more…) need some reporting on this!February 1, 2010
citing the gag order, officials are withholding information about hayes' condition and the circumstance of his apparent overdose on medication. somebody in some newsroom has to know somebody in the hospital to get this story out. come on gang!
