stacked one on top of the other, steven hayes' parole records are about six inches thick. they weigh as much as a library dictionary. as a body of work, they are the story of recidivist's voyage through the inept world of Connecticut's criminal justice.
for just about all of those years, most of his adult life, hayes was nothing more than a number in a system that he tried at every turn to manipulate.
but things have changed for steven hayes. although he's still assigned one, he is no longer just a number in jail. he has acquired an almost Shakespearean persona.
how much steven hayes has changed, however, is up for debate. is it true that self-incrimination and guilt now control his thoughts? or is he still the con he always was, just trying to get over?
in one way, he's gained something that always eluded him in prison-- notoriety. as a currency, notoriety goes a long way behind bars.
it's hard to believe that hayes could be this good of an actor. still, it's a role he's been rehearsing most of his life.
